Improving Soil Fertility - Why & How!

Soil is the number one source of nutrients for your crops.

That’s why the soil should be rich in the 15 nutrients necessary for any crop to grow into a healthy adult and gain sufficient profits in the market.

It must be free from toxicity, and all the nutrients should be in the right quantities.

It is a must to get a soil analysis test done before deciding to sow anything on your farm.

There are TWO types of soil fertility, each of which is a must to know for farmers.

1 Natural Fertility

As the name suggests, this is how fertile your soil is right off the bat. Any plant requires nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to ensure normal growth and yield. On average, Indian soil has 0.3 to 0.2 percent nitrogen, 0.03 to 0.3 percent phosphorus, and 0.4 to 0.5 percent potassium.

The soil's natural fertility is generally not lost unless exerted with excessive and dicey farming methods - this may include overfarming, overwatering, or using too many chemicals.

Organic farming methods help maintain the natural fertility levels of the soil. If you are looking for them, then check out MahakalAgro

2 Acquired Fertility

When the fertility of the soil is improved by using manures and fertilizers, proper irrigation, and tillage you call the farmland to have acquired fertility. That said, just because you increase the number of fertilizers in the land, may not have the expected effects on the produce. Only use as much fertilizer as the soil and plant requirements.

To find out the current fertility of the farm you’re working with, get a soil analysis test.

Now, let’s talk about how you can improve the fertility of your soil.

1 Biochar

Biochar becomes a direct nutrient source for the soil as it changes the physicochemical qualities and properties of the soil it is used on. Consult an expert before using biochar because different soils require different dosage amounts, and application methods may also vary. Talk to us at MahakalAgro.

2 Organic Matter

One of the most effective ways to improve soil fertility is by using organic matter such as manure from farm animals. Most plant nutrition absorption will improve shortly after using organic matter.

P.S. Make sure the manure has been tested for diseases before use.

          3 Green Manuring

Here, you will grow certain plants that draw nutrients from the soil and store them in their bodies. Instead of removing them, they are tilled into the soil before the actual crops are to be sowed. As the first plants decompose, the soil gets its nutrients that the final crops can absorb. Green manuring is great for large-scale farms.

Soil analysis after this process will show you the improvement in the fertility of your farm.

4 Mulching

A material known as mulch is applied to the top of the soil which helps to conserve moisture in the soil, improve fertility & health of the soil, and reduce weed growth. Mostly all mulch is organic but needs to be applied in a proper way to make the most out of it.

Ensuring plant nutrition and absorption are taking place as they should be can help maintain crop yield and quality.

The fertility of the soil will drastically change the way your crop grows and when it is ready for harvest. Plus, the chances of disease will also reduce or increase based on how fertile your soil is.
